Music & Poetry: Ethan Hopkins + Mike Shay

August 21, 2017 • 7:30 p.m.
Metro Coffee Company

Ethan Hopkins is a unique local musician and producer. He started his career at only fifteen years old and since then has released four studio singles and a music video with over 1500 views. He is commonly known as "The Ukulele Kid" because of the iconic ukulele he carries around. Writing a wholesome blend of pop, folk, and reggae, Ethan entertains crowds ranging from five at a coffee shop to as many as hundreds at festivals.

Melodically, his music is usually straight-forward yet catchy. Described as "broken-down" and relatable. Lyrically, his words are simple yet cryptic at second glance. Ethan Hopkins describes his writing process in an interview as "very detailed oriented, sometimes taking days to months to complete a single song". Additionally to writing and producing his own music, Ethan songwrites and produces singles for names like KALI and Lily Malone.

Michael Shay's book of short stories, The Weight of a Body, was published by Ghost Road Press in 2006. His fiction and essays have appeared in Flash Fiction Review, Silver Birch Press, Northern Lights, High Plains Literary Review, Colorado Review, Owen Wister Review, and the anthologies Working Words: Punching the Clock and Kicking out the Jams, Easy to Love but Hard to Raise, Manifest West: Even Cowboys Carry Cell Phones, Companions in Wonder: Children and Adults Exploring Nature Together, Blood, Water, Wind, and Stone: An Anthology of Wyoming Writers, and In Short, a Norton anthology of brief creative nonfiction. Michael retired from the Wyoming Arts Council in 2016. He lives in Cheyenne and blogs at hummingbirdminds.com.
